Congratulations to Dr. Sofia Jawed-Wessel on her TOYO!

Community

Today is all about Dr. Sofia Jawed-Wessel who is getting the TOYO Award tonight for Ten Outstanding Young Omahans!

In schools, in cities, in healthcare centers, people cannot live their best lives unless they are supported by policy and practices that are based on the best information. Sofia knows this and uses her talent as a researcher, organizer, and speaker to shoulder the task of improving people's lives in measurable ways. Her findings about sexual health have spread throughout the academic community resulting in policy recommendations that affect everyday people on the ground level. She is one of those people who is working hard behind the scenes on things the rest of us think "just happen."

Sofia's reach can be felt in Nebraska in our policy, in our school curricula, in best practices and strategies used by nonprofits and community organizations. But the important thing is that the work she does in public health and policy touches those who are most in need of a champion. Her unique dedication to research and advocacy that keeps all people's needs in mind is how she makes an impact not just on public health, but on our potential for economic growth and reducing inequality.

It must be said--and I will say it, because she won't--that this work is sometimes thankless, and often dangerous, and never easy. But Sofia is a rare person whose intellectual fortitude and mental stamina has compelled her to live in service to others. When you are trying to influence public attitudes about sexual health and justice, many days feel like a fight, and that's why we celebrate when we earn our wins.

Sof, I want you to know that I see how strong you are, how hard you work, but most importantly how the outcomes of your work reach far beyond what any of us will ever be able to quantify. The ideas that come out of your mind, Sofia, the body of work you are generating in your career, is needed. It’s needed. People need you. And the impact of your legacy, of service and activism through science, will far outlive us all.

And tonight, we’re going to celebrate you. Congratulations, Sofia!
