Douglas County Food Pantry Information

Issues

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Below you will find a comprehensive list of the food pantries in Douglas County, carefully compiled by my former intern, Cleo, so our community can connect directly with local food resources.

As of November 1st, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which feeds more than 150,000 Nebraskan children and families, will run out of funding because of the ongoing government shutdown and President Trump’s refusal to release existing contingency funds. This is not an abstract budget issue. It’s a deliberate choice that will take food away from seniors, working families, and children across our state.

Other states are already acting: Virginia and Louisiana have declared states of emergency to deploy short-term state funds for food aid. Governor Pillen could do the same right now, if he chooses to.

Here are ways you can help today:

  • Contact Governor Pillen’s office and urge him to declare a state of emergency for food assistance, just like other governors have done.
  • Contact Nebraska's federal delegation. Nebraska Appleseed has created a great and easy to use connection portal: bit.ly/fundSNAP
  • Share this pantry list widely. Post it in community spaces, schools, workplaces, and on social media.
  • Support local pantries and food banks with donations or volunteer time. They will be overwhelmed in the coming weeks.
  • Mutual Aid: Pick a little free pantry and make sure it is stocked all month – or start a new one!
  • Reach out to a school in your neighborhood, or in a neighborhood you know is impacted by poverty, and ask the school social worker and PTO if they have a fund to support families.
  • Connect with your local community center and ask if they have a meal program you could support financially or by volunteering.

Cleo’s list of Douglas County pantries is below, with hours, contact info, and eligibility details. Please keep it handy and share it widely.

We shouldn’t have to rely on patchwork charity to feed our neighbors, but until our policies reflect our values, we’ll take care of one another, as Nebraskans always have.

Best,

Meg
