A year ago today I was speaking at the Mother’s Day March outside Congressman Don Bacon’s town hall event, where Nebraskans rose up to fight for our rights to accessible, affordable healthcare. Building a healthy, prosperous community requires providing opportunities for all individuals, especially women, the elderly, children, and the most vulnerable among us, to thrive through access to healthcare. And good public policy that serves all of us cannot be held hostage by politicians demanding our healthcare as ransom, and it’s not going to happen if we stand up, fight back, and remind them who they work for. Happy Mother’s Day, and don’t forget to tell your elected officials: We brought you into this world, and we can vote you out!! Your elected representatives are accountable to you, and I promise that in the Nebraska Legislature, I will never forget that. I've never forgotten a sack lunch, a school permission slip, a health form for summer camp, or a birthday gift, and I think we would be better off as a society if more mothers were in charge. Everything I have, love, and am is thanks to mothers. And this Tuesday, I will be thinking of mothers everywhere as I cast votes for candidates like me who will work hard to support children and families.
All the best, Meg
